Italy. 2/7/1943

Italy mission,6xBf109G6s vs P51s P38sBlenheims.

Mission details:

Taken off from our home base in south Italy and started to patrol the target sector.Group 1 (Jack,Daerdor,Fred) engaged 6 boogies,quickly claiming 3 blenheims in few minutes,2 falling to Jack and 1 to Daerdor.After that hell broke out as P38s and P51s engaged our pilots.. After a confusing dogfight, 3 P51s got shot down Jack,K.B & Fox claimed 1 each.Gruppenkomandeur Jack and his wingman Daerdor got shoot down in the fight,Daerdor got out unhurt but Jack was KIA after his engine was set ablaze.From 4 P38s ,Daerdor shot

Personal stats today:

1-Jack-> Gruppenkomandeur, 3 confirmed kills,2 Blenheims and a Mustang,Killed in Action.
2-Daerdor -> 2 confirmed kills,1 Blenheim and a Lightning.Bailed,but survived.
3-Fred -> no kills,few damaged.Crash Landed,pilot unhurt.

5-Fox ->Gruppenadjutant,1 confirmed P51 Mustang kill,Landed,nosed over,pilot unhurt.
6- AI,KIA.
7-K.B -> 4 confirmed kills,3xP38s and Mustang.Landed.

Luftwaffe estimations for the day:
We claimed ~11 enemy destroyed + 2 damaged,lost 4 Bf109s in the process.

Tog off from airfield and followed fox we climped to 4-5km and was patroling to the south of nav point 4, got called in to back up 1st fligth and turned north in direction of airfield after i reaching the airfield i got an unknown contact to oure 2-o-cloke called it in and we whent at it, it turned out to be 3xP-51 they splitted and i whent head to head whit there lead plane shot the pilot and most of hes motor whit my 20mil(no chute), after seeing there leader go down the 2 remaining p-51 whent emo on me and started chasing me around luckly one got shot down fairly fast and the other i out manuvered in a serie of brilliantly executed turns and fake stalls, he then rand off and got nicked by frendly plane. When we where trying to reorgenise i god contact whit 2x2 fligths of P-38s the left fligth whit 2 P-38 whent north torwards the rest of my fligth and the rigth nenmy fligth i whent head to head on cousing nr2 plane to have a fuel leak and som wing damage strait after i mad a scharp turn and started pusuing em after 2-3mins of stalking em i got close enoc to shoot the allready damaged plane to pices(no chute) the first plane from that fligth got then after a long hard figth shot down by frendly plane, i then started to head back to the area of the airfield and encounted a P-38 there was making a run for it i cam zooming in on him from hes 3-o-cloke and fired a long burst from hes wing tip to wing tip and he whent down in a trail of fire(no chute), i then was comming to Fred to help him getting chased by the last P-38 as soon as i cam the P-38 broke off and ran for it so i started to trail him slowly getting closer and closer untill i was apox 20m away and i shot off hes rigth wing(chute) he after when down and is now enjoying the german hospetality in a happy camp somwhere. As th last plane still flying i returned to the airfield to have a long talk whit that FlaK gunner there made holes in my wing.

Flieger Daerdor's diary 2/7/1943

This time no grease on the windshield!

I took off behind the Gruppenkommandeur and we flew north at an altitude of about 4000. After a few minutes our Kommandeur spotted six 'Indianer' in groups of three. We quickly acted, the Kommandeur going for the left batch and I went after the one on the bottom right.
After a tense dogfight I managed to get on his tail and let my sweet 20mm bite at his wings! HA, scratch one bogey!

I had to get back my bearings after this fight, I had lost a lot of altitude. I also lost comms with the Kommandeur at that point ... hopefully he makes it back in one piece...
When back at 4000 I was bounced by two P38's. I managed to break off so the first one was overshooting, I got on his tail and again let the 20mm do what it's best at ... a second 'Indianer' down!

The second P38 also overtook me but he was too fast. I tried to keep up with him but my poor 'Gustav' wasn't up to it. Luckily I got backup from the Gruppenadjudant, he was quickly gaining on both me and the bogey. The Adjudant also informed me of a second bogey who was on my tail but he would go after it.

However, after a few seconds I saw tracers pass my cockpit followed by my Daimler-Benz sputtering. Suddenly I was spinning downwards, I tried to correct my heading but it was to no avail. I looked out of my cockpit and ... my right wing was gone! Damn the Gruppenadjudant! I should have known he was fixating his eyes on the picture of black Lola in his cockpit instead of on the bogey at my tail!

So, the only sane thing to do at that moment was get the hell out of that cockpit. I opened the canopy and bailed out! Scheize! The parachute didn't open as expected! I frantically pulled the rope and finally it went open ... let's just hope no one of the ground personnel will notice that I dirtied my pants ...
